In a collective effort to preserve and promote the unique mountain landscape of Crete and Cretan hinterlandand in Chania, a meeting was recently held at the traditional tavern of Xiri in Chania. We focused on critical issues such as the opening of hiking trails to enhance biodiversity and the integrated mapping of areas.
The meeting took place with the contribution of Noema Solutions, as it brought us in contact with Mr. Apostolis Stratiki, representative of Terra Pindus and his companions, experts and lovers of the conservation of the natural heritage of Greece, who were already in the mountainous Crete for 4 days in order to discover new experiences that will help the cause. At the same time, among the attendees was also Mr. Markos Malandrakis, who conveyed the urgent needs of the Municipality of Platanias and together we all joined forces to brainstorm ideas and implement sustainable solutions.
Mapping of trails in Cretan hinterland
More generally, one of the primary objectives of the meeting was the mapping of trails in mountain areas. The attendees were actively involved in finding and creating a network to signal the hikers, ensuring their safety during their journeys through a transmitter that would provide them with an emergency button for any emergency that might become necessary, transmitting their location. This initiative responds to an urgent requirement for the safety of both local and visiting hikers.
Opportunities
In addition, MACC did not miss the opportunity to meet with the newly elected mayor of Sfakia Mr. John Zervos. The discussions revolved around the implementation of similar actions in the Municipality of Sfakia, focusing not only on the safety of hikers and the promotion and discovery of the mountainous area but also on the upgrading of the infrastructure of the Municipality. At MACC we are committed to promoting cultural heritage and we are excited when we work with people who share the same vision, which is what happened with the Mayor of Sfakia, through various ideas for activities. These initiatives aim to promote and educate local communities in basic practices and to promote their “cultural heritage”.
This collective effort is proof of the commitment of local communities, environmentalists and experts who are trying to preserve the natural beauty and biodiversity of Crete and Chania. Through meetings like these, our society is taking important steps towards a sustainable future, promoting a part of Agrotourism and Ecotourism, preserving the natural habitats that make Crete a unique destination and MACC is committed to making these actions a reality.
