MACC participated in the official FSTP Launching Event for Selected Projects of I3-4-BIOFERTILIZERS, presenting its role as coordinating partner of BioActiveWool, an innovative project focused on the evaluation of sheep-wool–based biofertilizers enriched with microbial biostimulants.
The Mediterranean Agrofood Competence Center – MACC participated in the FSTP Launching Event for Selected Projects of the European project I3-4-BIOFERTILIZERS, bringing together the selected projects funded through the Financial Support to Third Parties (FSTP) scheme.
MACC participates as the coordinating partner of BioActiveWool, a project selected under I3-4-BIOFERTILIZERS. BioActiveWool focuses on the evaluation of sheep-wool–based biofertilizers enriched with microbial biostimulants, promoting a circular and low-impact alternative to conventional agricultural inputs.
BioActiveWool aims to valorise sheep wool as an organic base/carrier for the development and evaluation of innovative biofertilizers that can contribute to improved crop nutrition, soil health and the sustainability of agricultural production. The project’s innovation lies in combining the properties of sheep wool with the action of microbial biostimulants, with the aim of creating a practical and applicable solution for farmers.
Within the project, the following will be assessed:
- the agronomic effectiveness of sheep-wool–based biofertilizers,
- the contribution of microbial biostimulants to plant growth and resilience,
- their impact on soil health and soil functionality,
- crop quality,
- application protocols compared with standard fertilization practices.
Pilot applications will take place in Crete and Central Macedonia, generating practical evidence to support the uptake of sustainable, regionally produced biofertilizers by farmers. Through field trials, the project will contribute to the production of evidence-based results regarding the effectiveness, applicability and scale-up potential of the solution.
MACC’s participation in BioActiveWool strengthens the organisation’s strategy to promote circular bioeconomy, sustainable agriculture and innovative solutions that connect research, production and the market. At the same time, the project contributes to creating new opportunities for the sustainable use of local biological resources, such as sheep wool, in high added-value applications for the agrifood sector.
