Soil health is the first stage we need to take care of in order to have a large production of quality food products. ECHO is a pan-European research and innovation action aimed at involving citizens in its protection and restoration. <\/p>\n

The MACC Mediterranean Centre of Agri-Food Competence, through the MACC-SOIL initiative in collaboration with the American Farm School<\/a>, participates in the
as an ambassador of the action for Crete.<\/p>\n

Active contribution to data collection for ECHO in Crete<\/h3>\n

Participants actively contribute to data collection, with the ultimate goal of making informed decisions about soil health and agricultural land use. The study and evaluation of this data will provide important information that will be available to citizens, scientists, policy makers, farmers, landowners and other end-users. <\/p>\n

The aim of the project is to collect data for 16,500 different sites located in different climatic and biogeographic regions.<\/p>\n

“Soil health has been an important goal for MACC from the beginning. This was also expressed through the MACC-SOIL<\/a> initiative. Thus, our participation as ambassadors of the ECHO programme in Crete was more than self-evident” says Dr. Michael Katharakis, Head of the Mediterranean Centre for Agri-Food Capacities. He concludes: “Documented knowledge of the existing situation is the first and most important step in developing sustainable and resilient practices for soil improvement, an issue of essential importance for the long-term preservation of the environment and the economic sustainability of rural communities.” <\/p>\n

Who is involved in the ECHO initiative<\/h3>\n

10 leading universities and research centres, 4 media and 2 foundations are participating in ECHO<\/a>, coordinated by the Free University of Bolzano-Bozen. The success criterion for the project will be to empower citizens to take an active role in making good decisions on soil issues, based on the knowledge gained from the project. <\/span><\/p>\n

We recall that MACC is a Centre of Excellence whose vision is to create a network of robust outward-looking businesses that will provide innovative products and services while respecting the rules of sustainability, resilience and zero environmental footprint.<\/p>\n
